The course is the classroom and laboratory portion of state-mandated testing for Nurse Aides in Ohio. The course is designed to prepare the students to successfully pass the state-mandated testing for Nurse Aides in Ohio. Students will satisfactorily complete the didactic and laboratory portion of the Ohio Department of Health’s, Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program, (NATCEP). This course will consist of 80 class lecture hours and skills development. This course is a flex course and may not follow the regular College calendar. The scheduled dates and times vary throughout the year. The course is taught off campus. Semesters available: Offered based on need. UG

1. Describe the role of the nursing assistant as it relates to the long term care facility to include: policies, procedure, and professionalism, legal and ethical behavior, residents’ rights, the medical record, and incident reports.	Written unit examinations during the term
2. Describe foundations of resident care to include: verbal and written communication, barriers of communication, guideline to communicate with patients with special needs, promote safety, infection control, and identify medical emergencies.	Written unit examinations during the term
3. Describe the importance of basic nursing care as it applies to the nursing assistant to include: admission, transfer, and discharge, monitoring vital signs, fluid balance (I&O), and dressing and bandage changes.	Written unit examinations during the term
4. Describe the importance of Nutrition and Hydration	Written unit examinations during the term
5. Identify guidelines for safety care skills as they apply to the nursing assistant to include: personal care of the resident, skin care and preventing pressure sores, guidelines assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, toileting, positioning and moving residents	Written unit examinations during the term

Perform patient care procedures in the laboratory setting to include: hand washing, ambulation techniques, applying anti-embolic stockings, denture care, dressing a patient, care skills of daily living such as: denture care, oral care, nail care, hair care, and feeding skills, making a bed, bathing a patient in bed, range and motion, perineal care for a female, wheelchair use, vital signs, vest restraints in bed, and weighing a patient.
