Group Communication explores the many facets of working and communicating in small groups. Emphasis is placed on learning the basic terms, principles, and theories of small group communication thus enabling participants to understand various types of group participation: leadership, roles, goal setting and achieving, conflict management, decision making, and problem solving. Students will analyze, adjust, and improve their own communication behaviors in groups. (This course may NOT be substituted for COMM 1010 - Speech ) Semesters available: Offered based on need. UG

Be able to define and explain basic terms, principles,

and theories of small group communication.

Quizzes throughout the semester. Midterm at week 9. Final exam at week 16.

Be able to analyze, adjust, and improve their

communication behaviors within groups.

Written paper week 15.

Demonstrate critical thinking and observation skills for

the group process

Students, placed in groups, will be assigned various “groups” to observe throughout the semester. They will then present an oral group presentation on their findings (week 14).

Demonstrate an understanding of various types of group

participation roles.

Quizzes throughout the semester. Oral group presentation during week 14. Midterm exam at week 9.

Be able to explain how diversity impacts how groups

interact

Oral group presentation in week 8.

Be able to analyze different types of conflict and

cohesion within groups.

Quizzes during the last half of the semester. Final exam at week 16.

Be able to identify the different types of problem

solving that takes place in groups.

Quizzes during the last half of the semester. Final exam at week 16
Be able to plan and conduct a meeting. Quizzes during the last half of the semester. Final exam at week 16. Oral group presentation week 14.
Demonstrate how to make a presentation as a group. Quizzes during the first third of the semester. Two oral group presentations at weeks 8 and 14.
