STNA 1150 - State Tested Nurse Asst CPR/First Aid Academic Division: Health Sciences Academic Discipline: State Tested Nurse Assistant Assistant Dean: Leesa Cox, MBA, PTA 1 Credit(s) A practical course in the care and handling of victims of common emergencies; i.e., transportation and household accidents, climate related emergencies. Areas include basic life support, victim assessment, shock, bleeding, bandaging, splinting, burns, poisoning, medical emergencies, rescue and moving victims, triage. Students who meet the examination requirements will receive both a Community First Aid and Safety card from the American Red Cross and Basic Life Support for Heath Care Provider Professional’s card from the American Heart Association. This course is a flex course and may not follow the regular College calendar. The scheduled dates and times vary throughout the year. The course is taught off campus. 4. Critical First Aid/Trauma Skills
a. Correctly perform a primary trauma survey.
b. Correctly perform a secondary trauma survey.
c. Successfully demonstrate the control of severe bleeding using direct pressure or a pressure dressing while wearing protective gloves.
d. Demonstrate various bandage wraps using gauze compress and bandage on any tapered body part while wearing protective gloves.
e. Correctly open an airway with the A jaw-thrust@ maneuver while maintaining cervical spine control (in-line traction).
f. Demonstrate proper skill in log-rolling a victim with a potential cervical spine injury.
g. Identify two critical differences between symptoms of intoxication/ chemical abuse and diabetic emergencies.
