ENGL 2110 - Creative Writing

Creative Writing is an introduction to the craft of writing in one or more genres (for example, fiction, poetry, non-fiction, etc). Students will analyze the elements of literature in published works and use those elements in their own work through a variety of in-class and out-of-class assignments and exercises. Students’ work will be presented and discussed in class-wide peer workshop format, and based on the responses of the instructor and their peers, students will provide revisions of some of their work by the end of the course. Required Prerequisite Course(s): Take ENGL 1010  with a minimum grade of C- or better.

Outcomes Assessments – How it is met & When it is met

1. Analyze the work of several published authors, focusing primarily on how those authors use the elements of literature.

In-class discussions of selected published works throughout the first half of the term (weeks 1-8).

2. Apply the elements of literature in original creative work.

Students’ original drafts and revisions throughout the term (weeks 1-8 and 9-15).
3. Produce a substantial amount of original creative work. Written assignments intended to generate ideas, both in-class and outside of class, throughout the first half of the term (weeks 1-8). Focus in the second half of the term (weeks 9-15) will be on longer and more complex works.
4. Critique student-produced works. Written tasks and participation in peer review, throughout the semester (weeks 1-8 and 9-15). As the semester progresses, an increasing amount of class time will be devoted to such workshops.

5. Revise selected original creative work, based on peer review and instructor feedback.

Submission of a final portfolio by the end of the term (week 16).
